At first the winds just blew all the time and never stopped. The gods soon got tired of this so they decided to give someone the position of keeping the winds locked up until one was needed. The person who was given this position was Aeolus, the son of Poseidon. Aeolus was able too maintain the winds by keeping them locked up in a cave on a mythical island off the coast of Sicily. When one of the gods called for a wind Aeolus would puncture the wall with his spear so only that wind could get out. When a wind needed too get back in, then he would puncture the cave with his spear so the wind could get back inside.
